What a third-party camera can and cannot do

Camera apps from the phone maker are tuned for the specific sensor and lens, and they often use processing that other apps cannot access. A third-party camera app works through Android's camera interface. It can offer a different layout, extra manual controls, filters, a grid or timer options, and it may record at the highest resolution your phone allows. What it cannot do is add capabilities the hardware does not have: the "4K" or "HD" in an app's name only matters if your phone's camera supports those resolutions. On many phones, the built-in app will still produce sharper, better-exposed pictures because of its dedicated processing. Third-party cameras are most useful when you want a particular control the built-in app lacks, or when the stock camera is very basic.

Guide: trying it out

1. Find the app in your phone's official app store and check the developer name.
2. Grant camera and microphone access; storage access is needed to save files.
3. Take the same shot with this app and the built-in camera and compare.
4. Check the video resolution setting to see what your phone supports.
5. Keep the app only if it gives you something the built-in camera does not.

Tips for better phone photos

• Clean the lens; fingerprints cause soft, hazy pictures.
• Tap to focus on the subject and adjust exposure before shooting.
• Use both hands or rest the phone on something in low light.
• Shoot in good light whenever possible; no app can replace it.

Permissions and safety

• A camera app should not need contacts, SMS or call logs.
• Location access only matters if you want location tags in photos.
• Avoid APK copies from unknown sites; camera apps have access to your camera and microphone.
• Watch for intrusive ads or subscription prompts.
• Uninstall it if photos come out worse than with the built-in camera; there is no reason to keep a second camera app that adds nothing.

Pros and cons

• Pro: alternative interface and controls.
• Pro: free.
• Con: cannot exceed the phone's hardware capabilities.
• Con: no official download source in our data.
